GESTAPO PEACE PROCESS COURTS OF SPIES LIES FOR OLD IRISH FENIAN MARTIN COREY

Violent Loyalists still attack nationalist communities in British Occupied Ireland, while traditional Irish Republicans like Martin Corey believe they should be defended, as when he was a young man in Lurgan and his community were attacked then with, whole families shot, as they have been regularly, since the formation of the sectarian scum statelet of British Occupied Ireland, a hundred years ago. Then the British Army, Royal Ulster Constabulary, and several other elements of the British armed forces, were involved in ethnic cleansing, in the murder triangle. Martin put his life on the line, as an IRA volunteer, defended his community and shot two of the RUC, the same British armed force involved in State murder of his neighbours.

Martin served almost 20 years for what most of his neighbours would regard as his patriotic defense of his community. That was almost 40 years ago now and Martin still has the same political beliefs even though he is an old man now of 63. With the intensification of internment, with secret courts, which is in fact no trial, no charge, no defence, no knowledge of sentence for Irish Republicans like Martin Corey, the fury and injustice is building again, as the British ramp up political policing to the days before the Peace Process. The proof that Britain's Secret Service are hell bent on undermining the Irish Peace Process, can be found in the contrasting treatment of Orange Order Loyalist Stephen Irwin, perpetrator of the Greysteel Massacre and the internment without charge of trial, of traditional Irish Republican, Martin Corey.

By releasing a loyalist mass murderer early, to do some more of their dirty work of British State Terrorism, provoking Irish republicans in the process, with the injustice of their internment and prejudiced secret evidence, against Martin Corey, is precisely the same injustice, that fueled the conflict for more than 40 years last time. An enduring Peace Process is bound to fail, as sure as night follows day, with such provocative injustice.

Orange Order mass murderer Stephen Irwin, freed again for the second time, on the 20th anniversary of his Greysteel massacre. Irwin previously released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, was imprisoned again 8 years ago, for viciously slashing a fellow football fan, at a soccer match with a knife. He was told then, he would serve his full sentence, for the eight murders at the Rising Sun Bar massacre. The Orangeman was granted early release last week, by the Orange parole board, and walked out of the Orange controlled prison, after commissioners ruled his immediate release. John Dallat a moderate Member of the Stormont Parliament {SDLP MLA}, who is not compromised to the British Secret Services, described it as “unbelievably insensitive,” coming so soon, before the anniversary of the Greysteel massacre.

Not so for Martin Corey 63 year old, Irish Republican, coming up slowly but surely on four years, an interned critic of political conscience, of the still sectarian system, entrenched in Stormont. Despite the British courts demanding and ordering his freedom on constitutional grounds, an unelected prejudiced English Viceroyal, from Owen Patterson to Viceroyal Villiers, have on the word of spies lies, interned political the Irish political hostage, on Kafkaesque secret evidence in a colonial gestapo trial. Held in the most brutal conditions in Maghaberry Concentration Camp within a prison, following the closure ofLong Kesh, he has been beaten forcibly, strip searched and brutalized, while many of his former comrades remain silent or even justify and administer his political torture. These attacks on Martin Corey are not only aimed at him, but serve to remind what will happen to anyone who dares speak of a unified Ireland. To ignore Martin Corey and internment without trial is to turn a blind eye to the criminalization of politics in British Occupied Ireland and a green hght to go ahead and intensify their intimidation and political kidnap. All who love Peace and Justice, must stand beside this elderly patriot and prevent his torture in every way we can. Only a political sociopath can ignore such provocative, blatant, injustice.

Gestapo Courts

A lot of sound and fury has been expended in the British media over the last few months about the Coalition government's proposal to enact secret courts via the proposed Justice and Security Bill - purely for terrorist cases, you understand. Which, of course, is OK as we all know terrorists are by definition the Baddies.
Except we need to drill down into the detail of the proposals, have a look at some history, and think through the future implications.
The concept of secret courts emerged from the official UK spook sector - MI5 and MI6 have been lobbying hard for such protection over recent years. Their argument revolves around a number of civil cases, where British victims of extraordinary rendition and subsequent torture have sued the pants off the spies through civil courts and received some recompense for their years of suffering.
The most notorious case was that of Binyam Mohamed, who was repeatedly tortured in a black prison in Morocco, with British spies allegedly contributing to his questioning. And we're not talking about a few stress positions, awful as they are. Mohamed was strung up and had his penis repeatedly slashed with a razor.
MI5 and MI6 are aggrieved because they could not defend themselves in the resultant civil actions brought against them, and they (and their former political master Jack Straw) are particularly worried about future cases around the MI6-organised Libyan renditionsexposed last year. The spies' argument is that having to produce evidence in their own defence would damage that ever-flexible but curiously vague concept of "national security".
Well, they would say that, wouldn't they?
The spooks have traditionally used the "national security" argument as the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card. It has never been legally defined, but it is unfailingly effective with judges and politicians.
We saw similar arguments during the post-9/11 security flap, when many terrorist suspects were scooped up and interned in high security British prisons such as Belmarsh on the say-so of faceless intelligence officers. No evidence needed to be adduced, nor could it be challenged. The subsequent control order system was equally Kafkaesque.
That's not to say that certain interned individuals might not have been an active threat to the UK. However, in the "good" old days (god, I sound ancient), suspects would have had evidence gathered against them, been tried by a jury, convicted and imprisoned. The system was never perfect and evidence could be egregiously withheld, but at least appeals were possible, most notably in the case of the Birmingham Six.
Since 9/11 even breathing the word "terrorist" has meant that all these historic common law principles seem to have been jettisoned. Even before the proposed enshrinement of "secret courts" in the new Bill, they are already being used in the UK - the Special Immigration Appeal Commission (SIAC) tribunals hear secret evidence and the defendant's chosen lawyer is not allowed to attend. Instead a special, government-approved advocate is appointed to "represent the interests" of the defendant who is not allowed to know what his accusers have to say. And there was no appeal.
But all this is so unnecessary. The powers are already in place to be used (and abused) to shroud our notionally open court process in secrecy. Judges can exclude the press and the public from court rooms by declaring the session in camera for all or part of the proceedings. Plus, in national security cases, government ministers can also issue Public Interest Immunity Certificates (PIIs) that not only bar the press from reporting the proceedings, but can also ban them from reporting they are gagged - the governmental super-injunction.
So the powers already exist to protect "national security". No, the real point of the new secret courts is to ensure that the defendant and, particularly in my view, their chosen lawyers cannot hear the allegations if based on intelligence of any kind. Yet even the spies themselves agree that the only type of intelligence that really needs to be kept secret involves ongoing operations, agent names, and sensitive operational techniques.
And as for the right to be tried by a jury of your peers - forget it. Of course juries will have no place in such secret courts. The only time we have seen such draconian judicial measures in the UK outside a time of official war was during the Troubles in Northern Ireland - the infamous Diplock Courts - beginning in the 1970s and which incredibly were still in use this year.
As a former MI5 intelligence officer, I am not an apologist of terrorism although I can understand the social injustice that can lead to it. However, I'm also very aware that the threat can be artificially ramped up and manipulated to achieve preconceived political goals.
I would suggest that the concept of secret courts will prove fatally dangerous to our democracy. It may start with the concept of getting the Big Bad Terrorist, but in more politically unstable or stringent economic times this concept is wide open to mission creep.
We are already seeing a slide towards expanding the definition of "terrorist" to include "domestic extremists", activists, single issue campaigners et al, as I have written before. And just recently information was leaked about a new public-private EU initiative, Clean IT, that proposes ever more invasive and draconian policing powers to hunt down "terrorists" on the internet. This proposal fails to define terrorism, but does provide for endemic electronic surveillance of the EU. Pure corporatism.
Allowing secret courts to try people on the say-so of a shadowy, unaccountable and burgeoning spy community lands us straight back in the pages of history: La Terreur of revolutionary France, the creepy surveillance of the Stasi, or the disappearances and torture of the Gestapo.
Have we learned nothing?

Subject: [UK-911-Truth] MI5 whistleblower Annie Machon - Gestapo Past and
Present

Last week I was on holiday with my lovely Dutchman in Cologne on the
Rhine in Germany, a city steeped in history and now chiefly famous
for its Gothic cathedral, widely reputed to be pretty much the last
building left standing in the city at the end of WW2.  Easily
resisting both this religious hotspot and, with slightly more
difficulty, the  siren calls of the brauerei, we decided on a bit of
culture, some museums and a stroll along the river.
However, it turns out that not one but two buildings had survived WW2
in their entirety.  Tucked away on a backstreet, we found the second
survivor: the Gestapo HQ, which had been preserved as it was found at
the end of the war to serve as a ghastly warning to history.
Well, as someone who regularly speaks at conferences across the world
about human rights, totalitarianism and encroaching police states, I
felt I had to have a look.  The building is a nondescript office
block that looks perfectly innocent from the outside.  Three floors
are open to the public.  On the first is the museum, with the history
of the rise to power of the Nazis.  It was hideously fascinating to
read how freedoms and rights were incrementally eroded as the state
slipped ever more from democracy.  The majority of the German people
went sleep-walking into national socialism.  As soon as Hitler had
any sort of political power his attack-dogs, the SS, used
disproportionate, sudden, and shocking violence against Germany's own
citizens to crush any nascent resistance.  So from 1933 onwards the
population was terrorised, as "undesirables" were routinely snatched
from their homes for questioning, torture and imprisonment.
And the propaganda in the media that was on display.....  Shall I
just say, even more unsubtle than that which is used against us
today.  I suppose these dark arts have developed over the intervening years.
But it was the lower floors that packed the strongest punch.  The
basement, just below street level, held the cells - tiny, dank spaces
where as many as 30 people had been herded together.  And the walls
are covered in graffiti in all the languages of Europe - sad,
desperate messages to the future from people who were "disappeared".
They seemed to want to leave a record of the fact simply that they
had existed: they had loved, they missed their families, they were
trying to hold their heads high despite the agonies inflicted daily,
they were innocent, they were about to die......
There was one more level - the reinforced rat hole deep underground,
which served both as the air-raid shelter for the Gestapo officers
(the prisoners were left upstairs in their cells during the raids),
and as the torture rooms.  Considerately, the Gestapo carried out
their most brutal interrogations underground, so that the screams
could not be heard at street level.
As we emerged, somewhat silent, from this museum, I noticed that we,
and many other visitors, all turned to stare at this building: it
looked so bland and innocuous from the outside.  But then people
would inspect the basement windows that hid the cells.  The smokers
in the group all sparked up as soon as they were outside, dragging
hard on their cigarettes.  Others just stood silently.
So the museum does its job.  It is a powerful warning from the
grave.  Homo homini lupus: man is wolf to man, ever has been and ever
will be, absent adequate legal restraint.  This is why the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights was put in place in 1948, to prevent such
atrocities from happening again.
Yet, at the risk of sounding sententious, such abuse is going on
around the world right now, particularly in the cause of the endless,
nebulous "war on terror".  We have been lazy, blind and foolish,
letting our basic rights slide away.  People are disappeared,
extraordinarily rendered, to foreign prisons and tortured for
years.  Assassination lists have been drawn up by US intelligence
agencies; suspects face kangaroo, military-style courtrooms, where
they face the death penalty but are not allowed to know the full case
against them; our governments aggressively, illegally, invade other
countries, and yet the politicians who lie to take us into these
wars, thereby causing the needless death, poisoning, maiming and
displacement of millions of people, are not called to account for
their crimes, as they should be under the Nuremberg Principles, the
Rome Statute, and the International Criminal Court.
We, the citizens of still just-about-functioning democracies, should
be ashamed.  We need to re-remember our history and take a stand -
before it's too late.

The Geheime Staatspolizei (German for Secret State Police, abbreviated “Gestapo”) was the secret police of Nazi Germany, and its main tool of oppression and destruction, which persecuted Germans, opponents of the regime, and Jews. It later played a central role in helping carry out the Nazi's "Final Solution."

The Gestapo was formally organized after the Nazis seized power in 1933. Hermann Göring, the Prussian minister of the interior, detached the espionage and political units of the Prussian police and proceeded to staff them with thousands of Nazis. On April 26, 1933, Göring became the commander of this new force that was given power to shadow, arrest, interrogate, and intern any "enemies" of the state. At the same time that Goring was organzing the Gestapo, Heinrich Himmler was directing the SS (Schutzstaffel, German for “Protective Echelon”), Hitler's elite paramilitary corps. In April 1936, he was given command of the Gestapo as well, integrating all of Germany's police units under Himmler.

Later in 1936, the Gestapo was merged with the Kriminalpolizei (or “Kripo,” German for Criminal Police). The newly integrated unit was the called the Sicherheitspolizei (or “Sipo,” German for Secret Police). In 1939, during the reorganization of the German armies, the Sipo was joined with an intelligence branch of the military known as theSicherheitsdienst (“SD,” meaning Security Service). After this merger, the Sipo became known as theReichssicherheitshauptamt (“RSHA,” meaning Reich Security Central Office), and was headed by Reinhard Heydrich. Because of these frequent changes, the functions of the Gestapo became blurred, and often overlapped with those of the other branches of the German forces.

During World War II, the Einsatzgruppen ("Task Force", mobile killing squads) was formed, and came to be an integral part of the Gestapo. It was the Einsatzgruppen's job to round up all the Jews and other “undesirables” living within Germany's newly conquered territories, and to either send them to concentration camps or put them to death.

At the end of 1940, when the Jews in Eastern Europe were interned in ghettos, the Gestapo was charged with guarding and supervising the ghettos, imposing forced labor, and causing starvation and disease in an effort to decimate the ghetto inhabitants. After the invasion of Russia in 1941, the decision was made to kill all the Jews of Europe in gas chambers and the Gestapo was called upon to supervise the dispatch of the Jews to the camps specially adapted or constructed for the program of mass murder.

The Gestapo units excelled in their unabated and premeditated cruelty, in their ability to delude its intended victims as to the fate that awaited them, and in the use of barbaric threats and torture to lead the victims to their death, all as part of the "Final Solution." The units were taught many torture techniques, and were also taught many of the practices that German doctors in Dachau tested on the inmates of concentration camps. During its tenure, the Gestapo operated without any restrictions from the civil authority, meaning that its members could not be tried for any of their police practices. This unconditional authority added an elitist element to the Gestapo; its members knew that whatever actions they took, no consequences would arise.

After the war, very few of the important members of the Gestapo were caught and brought to trial.

The role of the SA

  • image-0-thumb
  • image-1-thumb

In 1921 Hitler set up a group within the NSDAP that would protect his political meetings from attacks by rivals. It gave a military look, feel and discipline to the party. This group was known as the ‘stormtroopers’ (Sturm Abteilung – SA) or ‘Brownshirts’.
Many members of the SA were former soldiers unemployed since the end of the war. As the SA grew in size, rather than simply protecting Hitler and Nazi meetings from opponents, they began to disrupt the meetings of rival political groups.
As the Nazis gained power through democratic means, the SA gained a reputation as a well-organised gang of violent thugs. This frightened and put many off Nazism, but others were attracted by the organisation and discipline of a uniformed group.

Pussy Riot vs Marian Price v Julian Assange v British Gestapo

Pussy Riot vs Marian Price -
To each their own Hero and Villain

A couple of high profile freedom of speech cases are unfolding particularly in the UK. The Pussy Riot sentencing in Moscow, the granting by Ecuador of political asylum to Julian Assange and finally the continues interrnment in British occupied Ireland of Marian Price. These cases are in many ways similar, if not, at least comparable to each other.  In two of the cases, we have college drop-outs breaking the laws of major power, while the British Gestapo are prosecuting two and in all cases the offenders have become something of a symbol of resistance to the power of the state. The British gestapo state internement without trial and torture of Marian Price is essentially about denying the right to free speech.  There are also some important differences between them, critical ones, which would also make it reasonable to say these cases as not similar but opposites.

So in order to organize the issues it was decided to make a little table comparing and contrasting the Pussy Riot and Marian Price cases.  This is, of course, hardly an exhaustive comparison.  Think of it rather as a "back of the napkin" kind of quick review:

And yet, looking at this table, I find myself wondering how a Russian "performance group" (that is what they call themselves) like Pussy Riot became the almost instant mega-hero of so many Western public figures.  Do you think that I am exaggerating?  Then check out this list of Pussy Riot supporters I found on Wikipedia:
Kate Nash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Cornershop, Faith No More, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, Patti Smith, The Beastie Boys, Refused, Zola Jesus, Die Antwoord, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Townshend, The Joy Formidable, Peaches, Madonna, Genesis, Tegan and Sara, Johnny Marr, Courtney Love, Iiro Rantala, Propagandhi, Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Corinne Bailey Rae, Peter Hammill, Kathleen Hanna, Björk, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, British comedian Stephen Fry, Reykjavík Mayor Jón Gnarr and Warren Kinsella.  A letter of support from 120 members of the German parliament, the Bundestag, was sent to the Russian Ambassador to Germany, Vladimir Grinin. The letter referred to proceedings against the women as being disproportionate and draconian. On August 9, 2012, 400 Pussy Riot supporters in Berlin marched wearing colored balaclavas in a show of support for the group.
To this, I would add the very intensive and, frankly, totally over-the-top coverage of the Western corporate media of the Pussy Riot trial.
Amazing, no?  Could it be due to the quality of actual "musical performance" (called "punk prayer") which got these ladies arrested?  Well, judge for yourself:

And to get a full "appreciation" for their artistic "talent", here is the translation of the lyrics:

St. Maria, Virgin, Drive away Putin
Drive away! Drive away Putin!
Black robe, golden epaulettes
All parishioners are crawling and bowing
The ghost of freedom is in heaven
Gay pride sent to Siberia in chains
The head of the KGB is their chief saint
Leads protesters to prison under escort
In order not to offend the Holy
Women have to give birth and to love
Holy shit, shit, Lord's shit!
Holy shit, shit, Lord's shit!
St. Maria, Virgin, become a feminist
Become a feminist, Become a feminist
Church praises the rotten dictators
The cross-bearer procession of black limousines
In school you are going to meet with a teacher-preacher
Go to class - bring him money!
Patriarch Gundyaev believes in Putin
Bitch, you better believed in God
Belt of the Virgin is no substitute for mass-meetings
In protest of our Ever-Virgin Mary!
St. Maria, Virgin, Drive away Putin
Drive away! Drive away Putin!
While I cannot disagree with some of the ideas contained in this screed (the Moscow Patriarchate is, indeed, both highly corrupted and totally controlled by the Kremlin, and "Patriarch" Gudaev is a scoundrel and crook of the worst kind), it is rather obvious to me that the real intention of this performance is not to denounce any wrongs, but to achieve a maximum shock effect.  In fact, the Pussy Riot collective is nothing but the latest re-packaging of the infamous "Voina" ("war" in Russian)  performance group which became famous by such "events" as organizing group sex flash mobs in public museums or having sex with a frozen chicken in a supermarket. You probably think that I am jocking, right?  Nope, and to prove this, I am (reluctantly) posting these (deliberately small sized) photos of these "events" here.  And if you think that I am exaggerating something, you can click on these photos for a better view of these "events" or you can even follow the following links for a full series of large, non-pixellated, and rather nauseating photographs:

http://plucer.livejournal.com/281211.html?nojs=1

If the first of these events was supposed to be some kind of statement about (then) President Medvedev, the second one - entitled "why was the chicken f*cked" and "tale about how the c*nt fed the war" - did not even carry some vague message of any kind.

It is rather obvious these ladies, whether packaged as "Pussy Riot" or as "Voina", have no other message and no other purpose than to offend, disgust or shock.  Their sole stroke of genius was to add to their usual sex-centered "performances" an anti-Putin and anti-Orthodox message.  Here, they really struck gold as that got them an overnight hero status in the West.  And that, in turn, says much more about the West, than about these sexually frustrated and otherwise dysfunctional women.
Indeed, while the western elites are lining up behind Pussy Riot, a putatively civilized western country like the UK is acting like some kind of comic-book Nazi regime, writing threat letters to a sovereign country like Ecuador:

For all the diplomatic verbiage wrapped around it, this is a crude, mobster like, letter of blackmail.  Furthermore, and as I already mentioned in my commentary yesterday, there is absolutely no precedent in recent history to the kind of behavior shown by the UK in this matter.  In fact, ALL of the Assange case is one never ending exercise in bending and abusing the law for the purpose of persecuting Assange: from the ridiculous allegations of non-protected sex, to the Interpol Red Notice, to the categorical refusal of the Swedish prosecutors to interview Assange in the UK, to the British refusal to give any guarantees of non-extradition and, finally, the the British threats to storm the Ecuadorian embassy - its all totally without precedent.

Compare that, again, to the case of the Pussy Riot prosecution in Russia which is very much in line, or even less severe, than what is considered the norm in most western countries (check this excellent and detailed legal analysis by Alexander Mercouris for more info).

It is true that what is at the core of both issues is free speech.  It does not matter whether speech is intended to be political or in support of some noble ideal, or whether free is used to offend, insult or shock.  Speech is speech regardless.  However, why is it that the western elites do not support all forms of hate-speech like they do support Pussy Riot's?

Would anybody seriously suggest that if these ladies had organized their performance in, say, a French synagogue, the western elites would all rise up in their defense?  Of course not.   So what is going on here?

Furthermore, speech is not the same as opinion.  If, at least in theory, western societies do not limit the expression of opinion, they all limit the freedom of speech be it for national security reasons, repression of hate crimes, liable laws, etc.

So let's cut through the crap here and set the record straight: the West's support for Pussy Riot is not due to to their opinions about Putin or the Moscow Patriarchate (such opinions can - and are -  frequently and freely expressed in Russia), and neither is it due to some unconditional support for free speech, which the West also restricts (much more so than Russia, I would argue).

The sad truth is that the West's support for Pussy Riot is, in reality, nothing more than yet another expression of its rabid hatred for anything Russian or Russian Orthodox.  And if that means erecting a small group of sexually dysfunctional women into a banner for freedom, so be it!  And that if that also means looking away from the obscene and outrageous persecution of a real hero for freedom like Julian Assange by the US Empire and its vassals - then so be it also!
In a paradoxical way, Pussy Riot are a perfect symbol of what the West stands for, just as Julian Assange has become a symbol for what Russia - and all the other nations on earth which refuse to submit to the US Empire - stand for.

I see some poetic justice here, a form of karma, really.  The modern, post-Christian, pagan, West, with all its boundless hypocrisy and arrogance, has sunk to a gutter level of ideological warfare, openly supporting the sick and pathological and persecuting the noble and courageous.  I also find it quite beautiful that a small country like Ecuador has dared to do that which all the otherwise self-enamored countries of Europe could not: show some true courage, dignity and self-respect.

Truly - to each his own hero and his own villain.

Epilogue (provisional):

So Pussy Riot got themselves two years in jail.  I would have preferred that they be given 5 years of community service (you know, actually doing something halfway productive for their fellow Russians),  but that would immediately turn into yet another media circus, so I guess the judge made a good call.

As for Assange, his future will depend on the courage, or lack thereof, of the rest of the Latin American countries.  Ecuador cannot, by itself, prevail in a contest of wills against Uncle Sam's Poodle, but if this case sufficiently polarizes the public opinion in Latin America, the resulting public outrage might have some financial consequences for the UK and that might well force it to find some civilized and mutually acceptable solution to this embarrassing situation.  It would be nice if Russia or China also helped, but I am not holding my breath here - these two are not known for their altruism.

One more thing:
I apologize to anybody offended by the crude photos I posted today.  First, I assume that we are all adults here, but more importantly, and just like in my two articles about the "homo-lobby" (here and here), I feel that it is important to show things for what they really are and not just stick to abstract concepts.  It is one thing to discuss "sexual diversity" or "freedom of speech" and quite another to see a half-naked "man" with feathers or a woman publicly sticking a frozen chicken into her vagina.  A crude, disgusting, pathological and grotesque reality needs to be shown for what it is, and not for what its supporters want it to be.

The Saker

PS: Check today's BBC "coverage" of Julian Assange standing up to the British gestapo.

PPS: Here is the Ukrainian version of support for Pussy Riot:

Topless Protester Cuts Down Cross in Kiev
Activists from the Ukrainian feminist group Femen cut down a wooden crucifix in the center of the country’s capital, Kiev, on Friday in support of members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot whose trial on hooliganism charges comes to an end today.
A video posted online showed a topless blond Femen protester wearing red shorts, with the words “Free Riot” scrawled across her chest and arms, cutting the cross with a chainsaw and then pulling it down using a rope pulled by two other activists, and then posing with her arms extended crucifix-style.

The cross was put up on a high hill near Kiev’s downtown Independence Square during the 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution to commemorate the victims of political repression under Joseph Stalin.

“By this act, Femen is calling on all the healthy forces of our society to mercilessly cut out of our brains the rotten religious prejudices which dictatorships rely upon and which prevent the development of democracy and women’s freedom,” the Segodnya daily quoted the activists as saying.
