London 2012: North Korea's game delayed amid row over South's flag

London 2012 organisers suffered major embarrassment on the opening day of sporting action after North Korea initially refused to play their women's football match against Colombia. The North Koreans left the pitch in protest shortly before the end of their scheduled warmup in Glasgow last night amid scenes of high farce as the South Korean flag was shown on the Hampden Park big screens alongside the North Korean team lineup.

Kick-off was due at 7.45pm but the aggrieved players did not restart their warmup until just before 8.30pm, after the flag was replaced with the correct one on the scoreboards following extensive negotiations behind the scenes. The match eventually kicked off at 8.50pm.

The incident will cause huge discomfort to Games organisers. Hundreds of thousands of tickets for the men's and women's football tournaments were unsold, with a particular lack of interest in matches in Glasgow. An attendance of 15,000 was given for USA's win over France yesterday at Hampden Park – more than double that number of free tickets had been distributed.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games issued an immediate apology to the North Korea team: "Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen instead of the flag of North Korea," a Locog statement read. "Clearly that is a mistake. We will apologise to the team and the national Olympic committee and steps will be taken to ensure no repeat" a Locog statement said.

North Korea's coach, Ui Gun-sin, said that winning their match 2-0 against Colombia did not compensate for the mix-up. Ui said: "The national flag difference is a big problem. Our team was not going to participate unless the problem was solved properly. Unfortunately it took some time later for the broadcast [on the big screen] to be done again properly and we made the decision to go on with the match."

Ui added: "We were angry because our players were shown as if they were from South Korea which affects us very greatly. Our players cannot be shown especially with other flags, especially the South Korean one. If this matter had not been solved, continuing would have been a nonsense."

South Korea and North Korea, established as separate entities in 1948, have a tense relationship. Only two years ago, North Korean artillery killed four people, two from the military and two civilians, on Yeonpyeong Island in South Korea.

North Korea have a successful history of playing football on these shores. During the 1966 World Cup they achieved a famous upset, defeating Italy 1-0 at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park, before eventually losing 5-3 to Portugal in the quarter-finals. However, North Korea is familiar with Olympic controversies. The country boycotted the 1988 Games after being snubbed as co-hosts with Seoul, the capital city of their neighbours with whom they have a tense relationship.

The Colombia coach, Ricardo Rozo, felt the incident had affected his players. "It affected us," he said, "because you have to stop and we didn't know what was happening for a while but it was just something strange, something particular to this situation with North Korea involved and it hasn't damaged our feeling of the competition or the hosts."

London’s radiation and social problems, associated with Londons 2012 Olympics and the Queen's jubilee, will be swept under a giant carpet of smugness this Summer. London’s new piggy rich will scramble to ingratiate themselves with royal privilege, while politicians will ride the tide of distraction from real social issues The corporate media of the City of London will carefully choreograph imagery for the commoners like the old Roman empire did with their games for the plebs.

Things are not good in the UK just now, where just a stone's throw from the Olympic stadium, serious social deprivation in Newham, matches the inner city decay of the north of England, without any of the sense of national togetherness, that the establishment would like to portray. As one of the the extremely poor areas of the UK, there is very little this Olympic locality has in common with the Olympic Village, never mind the elite Jubilee Queen and her hangers on.

While Britain’s super-rich in the City of London have increased their wealth during this recession, the combined wealth of its 1,000 wealthiest people this year, £414billion, up 4.7 per cent on last year, while the rate of poverty in London is 28 per cent of its total population. Over one million Londoners now live in extreme low-income families, where despite at least one adult working, there is an increase of 60 per cent in poverty, in the last decade.

Despite well-documented connections between deprivation, inequality and social problems, the corporate media propaganda that last August’s riots were an outbreak of “sheer criminality” is now widely accepted. This smugness may very well come back and bite during the Olympics and Jubilee celebrations. Outbreaks of looting tend to occur in cities just a little too smug about their reality. London’s establishment are both smug and in serious denial about its increasingly vicious inequalities. A Dutch inner city expert Vantisphout after a visit to London had this to to say:

“The reality of urban riots is that they have always turned out to be the opposite of a learning experience for a city. Riots have nearly always resulted in politicians simplifying the problem even more, and citizens looking away even further.” So for the politicians the Jubilee and Olympics are a wonderful distraction, with the message from the aristocracy to the commoners, not to worry about the privatisation of their health service or worry about poverty, with its numerous accompanying social problems> Just clap your hands, smile, clap your hands and smile some more, stiff upper lip, blitz spirit and all that !.  So for the powerful these are very welcome diversions from serious problems.

The Diamond Jubilee marks 60 years of the Queen’s reign, with the Olympics between 27th July to 12th August. it is said that when the Queen was told about the extreme poverty in Britain and told that Lord Muck of Londonderry, was waiting in British Occupied Ireland with bated breath, to go down on his knees, amid even greater poverty where there id often nothing to eat to celebrate her jubilee, that she replied, "LET THEM EAT ARSEBISCUITS."

The investigation has revealed that Irish news channel Indymedia Ireland Is nothing but a front for  North Korea an evil spying network of murderers, documents recovered have revealed.The devastating evidence proves what Western intelligence services have been saying for years: that Indymedia Ireland is nothing but lies and propaganda, that even logging in to them is tantamount to treachery, and the only way to find out the truth is to watch government briefings on RTE and its sister channel the BBC.
