Long after the British army’s Parachute regiment left the west Belfast estate of Ballymurphy in September 1971, one of its members, Harry McCallion, reflected with pride that “we had over 15 confirmed kills but had claimed many more . . . It was merely convenient for the IRA that most of them had not been sworn in as members.”
These “kills” had not been sworn in because they were not members of the IRA at all; they were innocent civilians. Eleven of those killed by the Paras between August 9th and August 11th, 1971, were unarmed. Among them were a Catholic priest, Fr Hugh Mullan – who was clearly carrying an improvised white flag made from a babygro – and a mother of eight children, Joan Connolly, who was shot multiple times as she went to help a wounded boy. These events happened in the chaos of the introduction of internment, when the IRA launched concerted attacks on the British base in Ballymurphy. But the evidence strongly suggests that the victims were not caught in crossfire – they were killed by enraged soldiers in what were, at best, acts of appalling recklessness and, at worst, deliberate murders.
Last week, shortly before Gerry Adams was arrested, Northern Ireland Secretary,Theresa Villiers announced there would be no independent inquiry into the Ballymurphy killings. Sinn Féin rightly pointed to the outrageous double standard implied here. But Villiers also announced that there would be no inquiry into the hideous La Mon hotel fire-bombing in 1978, when the IRA incinerated 12 members of, of all things, the Irish Collie Club. The families of the La Mon victims believe, rightly or wrongly, that transcripts of police interviews with IRA suspects relating to this disgusting crime were deliberately removed from the files in order to protect senior figures of importance for the peace process. Did Sinn Féin complain about the continuing failure to give the La Mon families the comfort of truth? Of course not – it has double standards about double standards.
The abduction, murder and disappearing of Jean McConville is an atrocity that cries out for accountability. But so were the Ballymurphy killings, the La Mon bombing, the McGurk’s Bar bombing by the UVF in which 15 people died, and murder after bloody murder. While the gunmen on all sides preened themselves with talk of “kills” and “war”, the truth is that the conflict was largely about people with guns killing people without guns. So-called republican and loyalist paramilitaries lost between them 563 members. Well over three times as many defenceless civilians were murdered (1,879) – mostly by paramilitaries but in some cases by so-called security forces in or out of uniform. The slaughter of the innocents was not a byproduct of the Troubles – it was the main event.Lingering outrage
It was not enough, though, for these poor people to die once, to be the human fuel for a conflict that careened obscenely onwards long after it had lost any semblance of logic. Like souls in Dante’s hell, they have been given an excruciating punishment;

they are recruited to fight, again and again, in the strange meta-conflict that replaced the real one – the fight over which of the perpetrators can claim the coveted status of victimhood. There is, rightly, lingering outrage about the IRA’s “disappearing” of victims like Jean McConville, the denial of a decent burial. But in a sense, most victims are still denied a decent burial. Their bodies are figuratively dug up and paraded through the streets or dumped back again into the abyss of amnesia, depending on who needs them for what political purpose. Tribal disputes are still conducted in part as a form of competitive necromancy.
There are just two decent ways of dealing with the legacy of these atrocities: all or nothing. The nothing option has a certain integrity – it at least prevents the political exploitation of the dead. But it denies to bereaved families the right to know what happened to their loved ones. The only way to counter the exploitation of the dead is to start with the most obvious thing about them – that they died horrible, untimely deaths. Death brings a terrible equality: it does not discriminate between Protestant or Catholic, uniformed policeman or masked gunman, or even between innocent and guilty. Every violent death was a rending in the fabric of the lives of spouses, children and families. Each deserves acknowledgement – not for any political purpose but for its own sake and as a condition of a civilised society.

If Gerry Adams had anything to do with the killing of Jean McConville, he should answer for his actions. But it would be far better if he gave those answers to an open, independent commission with a remit to investigate all unsolved killings by state forces or by paramilitary organisations. If, by design or accident, Adams seems to be singled out, while other crimes are ignored, the cycle of selective memory and selective amnesia will go on. There are no special victims and there must be no special perpetrators.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered on December 23rd, 1996. She was battered to death with a rock and a concrete block. Fifty wounds were inflicted on her body.
Ian Bailey was first arrested on suspicion of the murder on February 10th, 1997. He was arrested again on January 27th, 1998. On March 30th, 2000, the DPP issued a formal direction that Ian Bailey should not be prosecuted on the basis of available evidence.
In 2001, an official in the office of the DPP, Robert Sheehan, wrote a detailed and damning (of the Garda conduct) analysis of “evidence” gardaí had assembled in connection with suspicions that Bailey had murdered Sophie Toscan du Plantier. It went through every strand of the Garda suspicions, including crucial “evidence” of “witness” Marie Farrell, which claimed Bailey had been seen by her in the vicinity of the crime scene around the relevant time. Even, given that “evidence”, Sheehan’s analysis concluded: “A prosecution against Bailey is not warranted by the evidence.”
In 2003, Bailey took a libel action against several newspapers. The key witness for the newspapers was Marie Farrell. Bailey lost the libel action and huge costs were awarded against him. He appealed the finding to the High Court.
In connection with this High Court appeal, an extensive discovery order was made by a judge of that court, Barry White, of all copy statements held by the office of the DPP that suggested Bailey was not implicated in the murder. About 700 statements were “discovered” but, curiously, Robert Sheehan’s damning analysis of the evidence was not included. There were 30 documents on which privilege was claimed and were not therefore disclosed.
Meanwhile, in 2005 Marie Farrell approached Bailey’s solicitor, Frank Buttimer, and made a statement to him, stating her previous statements and evidence were false, that she had been pressurised by gardaí into making these false statements and giving perjured evidence at the libel trial.
The High Court appeal against the Circuit Court finding against Ian Bailey was settled in 2007, with an agreement that Bailey would not have to pay any of the legal costs against the newspapers and a significant contribution was made by the newspapers towards Bailey’s legal costs.

Ian Bailey and his partner, Jules Thomas, commenced their civil actions against the State – her action is based on two unlawful arrests and detentions, one in clear defiance of directions from the DPP’s office.
There then commenced an action by a French magistrate, promoted to undertake an investigation into the murder, by lawyers representing the family of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, to have Bailey extradited to France to assist in the investigation and, possibly, to face trial there. All the relevant files were handed over to the French magistrate who was appointed to investigate the case. The High Court ordered the extradition of Ian Bailey but that was overturned in 2012 by the Supreme Court, members of which had sight of the 2001 analysis of the case by Robert Sheehan – that had been handed over by a Department of Justice official to Frank Buttimer in 2011.

The “explosive” material which
apparently shocked Enda Kenny on Sunday week last, and which propelled the resignation of Martin Callinan as Garda Commissioner, was unearthed by another discovery order, this time made by another High Court judge, John Hedigan, who is now “managing” the case and who may make further orders in connection with the case on Friday.
What is obvious from the timeline is the following:
n The office of the DPP and, almost certainly, Garda headquarters and the Department of Justice, knew since 2001 that there was egregious misconduct on the part of some gardaí handling the murder case.
n The DPP’s office, the Department of Justice, Garda headquarters, along with the entire political and media establishment have known since 2005, following Marie Farrell’s statement, that she had been coerced by gardaí into making a false statement and giving perjured evidence, that there was clear evidence of corruption on the part of some gardaí in an attempt to frame Bailey.
n Nevertheless, several institutions of the State collaborated with a French magistrate in seeking the extradition of Bailey.
n Alan Shatter must have known since the Supreme Court refusal to extradite that something outrageous had occurred .
n Although there was an internal Garda investigation , nobody seems to have been fired and certainly nobody prosecuted.
So how could any further material conveying corruption in the handling of this matter have shocked Enda Kenny on Sunday week last and caused the resignation of Martin Callinan on Tuesday last? - Vincent Browne, Irish Times

Invoices show Departments of Justice, Education and Social Protection targeted
Rehab paid Frank Flannery to lobby the Government
Fine Gael strategist and Rehab director Frank Flannery was paid thousands by the charity to lobby the Government, The Irish Times has learned.
Mr Flannery was paid for lobbying the Departments of Justice, Education and Social Protection, according to invoices submitted to the charity. The invoices were submitted in late 2011 and 2012, and were from Mr Flannery’s firm, Laragh Consulting Ltd.
The company invoiced Rehab for €66,000 in 2012 and €11,000 in 2011, and Mr Flannery, who did not respond to queries last night, previously said it “was used for a bit of private business”.
Two invoices seen by The Irish Times were for €5,500, excluding VAT, while another was for €11,000. Sources said invoices were submitted regularly in this period for the same activities, and usually amounted to about €5,500 a month.
UK companyIt is understood that even though Rehab Ireland was billed by Mr Flannery, the money was paid through a UK company associated with Rehab, TBG learning. Sources said this was a simple transaction. The invoices submitted by Mr Flannery, a former Rehab CEO, listed activities under the heading “provision of professional services of Mr Frank Flannery”.
The activities included “successfully lobbying in respect of the Charity Lottery Funds”; “lobbying with Department of Education and Department of Social Protection in respect of the activities of National Learning Network and TBG learning”; and “international representation in respect of Workability International and European Platform for Rehabilitaton”.
Mr Flannery is also a board member of the European Platform for Rehabilitation, as is Rehab CEO Angela Kerins.
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter is winding down the charitable lotteries scheme, a multimillion fund for charity lotteries, which compensated them for loss of business after the National Lottery was set up.
A Department of Justice statement said: “The Minister met with Rehab on 21 November 2011 at Rehab’s request, to discuss the Charitable Lotteries Scheme. Mr Frank Flannery was a member of the Rehab delegation at that meeting.”
A spokeswoman for Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn said Mr Quinn had no formal meetings with Mr Flannery, but might occasionally “bump into him in Leinster House”.
Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton’s spokesman said she has “not held any formal department meetings with Mr Flannery, but would have encountered him informally on occasion in Leinster House and at the Rehab People of the Year awards”.

As well as his European work, the statement said Mr Flannery had significant knowledge of the charitable lotteries scheme and his work included “meeting and briefing officials” in the Department of Justice.
“Other work conducted included the preparation of position papers for and with Rehab on labour market activation policy in Ireland, aspects of which has in recent years been the responsibility of both the Department of Education and Skills and the Department of Social Protection."
Mr Flannery, who is still active at the highest levels in Fine Gael and is a close associate of the Taoiseach, is to be asked to appear before the Public Accounts Committee to answer questions about Rehab.
Shatter declines to say if Connolly should appear at committee
Garda confidential recipient says he is considering whether to co-operate with review of Garda whistleblower’s allegations
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has declined to say if former Garda confidential recipient Oliver Connolly should appear before the Oireachtas justice committee or co-operate with a review of allegations made by Sgt Maurice McCabe.
Mr Connolly, sacked as confidential recipient by Mr Shatter last month, has said he is “uncertain” about what an appearance by him before the committee would achieve.
Mr Connolly said he is considering whether he will co-operate with a review of Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe’s allegations of misconduct within the force being carried out by Seán Guerin SC.
Mr Shatter would not say if Mr Connolly should co-operate with the inquiry set up by the Government.
This week Mr Connolly said he was still bound by the office he held as confidential recipient, and could not comment on any “alleged” or “unverified” conversations between himself and Sgt McCabe.
Sgt McCabe taped a conversation he had with Mr Connolly, and later released this to Independent TD Mick Wallace and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin. Mr Martin and Mr Wallace quoted Mr Connolly as telling Sgt McCabe: “If Shatter thinks you’re screwing him, you’re finished.”
When asked if and why he said this, Mr Connolly, who said he felt a “personal sense of betrayal” that the conversation was taped, replied that he could not say anything because of the confidentiality of his former office.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said he assumes Mr Connolly will be able to co-operate with Mr Guerin’s inquiry without breaching confidentiality. However, in response to a query from The Irish Times , Mr Shatter would not go that far.
He was asked if Mr Connolly should appear before the justice committee and co-operate with Mr Guerin’s review and any other investigations that may be carried out by theGarda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
In reply, his spokesperson said: “These are matters for Oliver Connolly and the Minister does not propose to comment.”
Mr Connolly did not respond to queries last night.

Another leaked phone call. This time between the Estonian FM and Catherine Ashton. It would seem to indicate that the same shooters on the rootops in Ukraine were shooting people on BOTH sides.
People have seen this kind of thing before in previous coups by the West such as the attempted coup against Chavez. It was used at the start of the Syria crisis before foreign mercenaries invaded and escalated matters much higher. It is standard operating procedure, dirty tricks 101.

US state dept diplomat Nuland "mutt" and Geoff are caught out nicely, in a hacked and leaked phone call. In what is probably the most brazen feat of brass necked hypocrisy I've ever seen, the mainstream media have tried to make it about how awful the russians are for spying on them. And this after the Snowden revelations!! "Fuck the EU" they say. But by far the worst thing about this is how they treat this uprising they are stoking with the aid of far right fascist thugs trained by NATO on the Russian border, like it's just some sort of a chess game.

This year will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Observing the media of Europe and the U.S one could be forgiven for seeing startling similarities between 2014 and 1914. Imperialist powers and entangling alliances pitting the world into two opposing camps over the fate of a small nation. In this case the autonomous Republic of Crimea. Crimea which is an autonomous region belonging to Ukraine but with an ethnic Russian majority has held the attention of world since the Pro-Russian government of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown by rioters in the countries capital of Kiev on February 23rd, 2014.

Call on Minister over salmon farm ‘wipe-out’
Simon Coveney is being asked to give the figures of the escapees from the recent storm damage to a salmon farm in Bantry Bay. A written parliamentary question tabled by Clare Daly, TD, is due for reply later this week.
According to the west cork based Friends of the Irish Environment, the farm has effectively been ‘wiped out’.
In a statement released today, the group said that they ‘understand that there are only between 3,000 and 5,000 fish left at a site that held between 160,000 – 180,000 salmon.’

Call on Minister over salmon farm ‘wipe-out’
Simon Coveney is being asked to give the figures of the escapees from the recent storm damage to a salmon farm in Bantry Bay. A written parliamentary question tabled by Clare Daly, TD, is due for reply later this week.
According to the west cork based Friends of the Irish Environment, the farm has effectively been ‘wiped out’.
In a statement released today, the group said that they ‘understand that there are only between 3,000 and 5,000 fish left at a site that held between 160,000 – 180,000 salmon.’
