Republican Sinn Féin
Sarah Hollywood Murphy – Statement from Comhairle Uladh
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sarah Hollywood Murphy from South Armagh. Sarah was known by Republicans the length and breadth of Ireland and nowhere more so than her native South Armagh.
Sarah lived in Ardoyne, for a time after she married. A woman with a social and political conscience, Sarah joined the Civil Rights movement and with others set up the North Belfast branch and took part in the march from Coalisland to Dungannon in 1968.
Sarah joined Sinn Féin and worked with Maire Drumm and Leo Martin (among others) to set up a Sinn Féin office at Dunville Park on the Falls Road with Sean Caughey. Sarah was a very active Republican and was deeply involved in the campaign against internment from 1971 to 1975.
When her family home was attacked in 1974 they moved to Newry but the move did not deter Sarah from her work in the Republican Movement. She was Secretary of the South Armagh H-Block Committee during the Blanket protest and the H-Block Hunger Strikes. Up to her death Sarah was a member of Republican Sinn Féin and a representative of the National Graves Association for Newry and South Armagh.
She worked tirelessly to highlight the internment of Martin Corey and called for his and Marian Price’s release, she considered both as political hostages. Political prisoners were always close to her heart and she highlighted right up until her death the dreadful conditions in Roe, House, Maghaberry jail, co Antrim, faced by current Republican Prisoners.
Throughout her years in the Republican Movement, Sarah was never afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believed in. She matched her words with deeds and will be sadly missed by all her friends and Comrades in Republican Sinn Féin.

I was introduced to Sarah, by Tom Lonergan more 33 years ago. Tom was
adopted, as Provisional Sinn Fein's first candidate, for the elections after the Hunger Strike but an undemocratic coup, overturned the wishes of the majority of republicans in South Armagh at that time.
Sarah was a true Irish Republican, who embodied Irish resistance to British Crown forces in Ireland to the very end. Her Spirit, along with that of Maire Drumm, lives in Ireland as long as Irish women and Irish men, in the same Spirit of Freedom, resist the jackboot of British Occupation in Ireland. An Phoblacht Abu ! Saoirse Red Sarah ! Spiorad Saoirse na hEireann ! Saoirse !
My sincere condolences to her extended Family ! I'm sorry I cannot make it back to Ireland from Asia in time for her funeral !
