FAKE FREEDOM FIGHTERS OF CAMOUFLAGED EGO
Below is an edited form, of the best article on fake freedom that I could find today, without its videos, but it covers the gist of it. I would like to preface it, by my own experience of freedom as best I can. If this bores you, just skip to the article. I have spent my whole life fighting for freedom, in one way or another to the best of my ability, most of it without success, until I reached a point of painful surrender within myself, where I was forced to undergo a major change and to accept, that I couldn't do it by myself without divine intervention.
I had to start with myself and get real about who I really am and what I am really about, which was painful. It started with a coin that states, "This above all else, to thine own self(real self) be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou cannot then be false to any man." Now that is a lot easier said than done for someone as selfish as I am, who demands instant gratification to the extent that I usually do with life's pleasures. We are blessed with Ego for healthy reasons but when it is fear driven, it can make us Ego maniacs which are abusive, something I know from bitter experience. Of course it is much easier for me, in the here and now to see this, away from day to day environment of hate and bitterness that is Occupied Ireland. When we become bitter, we lose the very same inspirational characteristics, that can turn cowards into heroes, which are part of the Irish Republican tradition
I believe I mentioned in a previous blog, that I was once sitting in an international 12 step meeting in Amsterdam years ago, where people were sharing their various neurosis, and everyone seemed to be laying the blame, on their various dysfunctional families of birth, scattered around the world in many countries, when a Limerick man with as little tolerance as me, in a very earnest manner, piped up,
"You fucking people think you have a problem with your dysfunctional families, what about me, I come from a dysfunctional fucking country.
In the many intervening years since, I have often thought about Jimmy's statement. Of course he was right in many respects but then how could it be any other way. Mother Ireland and her children have been raped ruthlessly for more than 800 years by both the Roman and British Empire and robbed of her rich heritage of the spiritual, cultural and the material. Fortunately we have had many warriors, who have also resisted for 800 years, and as result of that resistance, unlike many other fine races of people I have met, we are not totally emotionally broken or dead yet. The prize is not always what appears to be victory but what is learned, gained and experienced in the struggle. As a wise man once said the most valuable thing on this earth is experience. Long may it be so.
In the intervening years, as a result of my new path, I have experienced considerable joy and freedom. Unless our leaders personally experience freedom, how can they lead us there or even show us the correct path, that leads that way? It starts as an inside job. It starts with the truth within myself and the most important truth is not cerebral, at least not in my case, it is somewhere between my heart, Spirit or Soul. It is the Spirit of Freedom that Bobby Sands, obviously experienced, as he wrote within his prison cell. Perhaps the ultimate freedom is death and I sincerely hope for Bobby and his comrade's sake before and after him, that it is so, for their unselfishness, surely deserve it. I am not a religious person but I have experienced in a very real way, it's power, along with the power of belief.
Having said all of that, I am in no hurry to get there, because of the joys of life and the precious nature of it, that I am so grateful for. Freedom like the other important things in life, such as trust and quality, are, from my own experience earned. It appears sometimes to me, without being overly judgmental, that some people are content to remains as slaves, which can really anger me but perhaps I am mistaken. In our modern world as the tape above explains, in may instances, most of us are debt slaves. Like censorship, I detest the bankers or the money changers, as that famous Palestinian did. The bankers in the City of London, have been our masters for far too long but in the meantime, we are forced to a lesser or greater extent, to play the game. Anyone who has the illusion that the material is not a considerable factor, in the realm of freedom, I believe fools themselves.
I was fortunate enough to be involved in the creation of a film, with an English capitalist friend of mine, that won the Australian International Film Festival, as best drama feature, a number of years back and made a few bob with it. It enabled me to a certain extent, experience the material freedom and joys that come with it. I believe everyone who really wants that freedom on this earth, should have it. I believe in the Spirituality of Abundance is within us all, that I found in a small little book years ago.
I also believe everyone is entitled to that, but the bankers won't let you have it, neither will they give it to you. Like freedom, you need to believe it is your birthright and take it, in an intelligent way of course, that is not self destructive or foolish. If there are enough of us genuine and earnest about all of this, we would without doubt do it intelligently together. The choice is ours but you better be earnest about it, coming from love not hate, as I did in a self destructive, self defeatist way, for so long.
Bobby Sands wrote, we each have our own part to play in all of this, according to our capabilities. Many of us do not have his courage or unselfishness or indeed integrity required for bravery but like he said, we all have a part to play, no matter how small or great. For me in my own tinpot way, it's trying to produce this blog daily. I suggest for a newcomer, you try to find something that you love to do and do it from the heart. I salute all of you who have worked so tirelessly over the many years while I had to take a break. We need to do this sometimes, to get our strength back As Ruarai O'Bradaigh used to say, we have such a rich heritage of resistance in Ireland, that is there for inspiration, to anyone, who is in earnest to seek it out. Some of the stalwarts of Irish republicanism are still all around us for inspiration in the meantime.
That title. "The death of Irish Republicanism," what foolish nonsense with such a rich heritage, it can never die, it lives among us daily, consciously or not, it truly is in our blood and DNA. I would also humbly suggest to any newcomer, to choose your leaders wisely. Take the time and care to observe carefully, if they walk the talk and try to place at all times Principles before Personalities. None of us are saints and I certainly never have been, nor do I aspire to be one, so please forgive my human frailties and foolishness as best you can. I didn't mean to ramble on like this. All i wish to add, is that as far as I am concerned, no lover of genuine Irish freedom, engages in censorship. It is the anathema of what I believe genuine freedom is about and I will fight it to my dying breath.
By the way, if you see a busker on the side of an Irish road, whether his music is good or bad, throw him a few bob, if you can spare it, it could be me next time and it will come back to you tenfold, first lesson in the Spirituality of Abundance. There is more than enough for everyone, to travel first class in this world but the money changers will go to war to maintain their privilge, to satisfy their extreme lust for power, that money can create. The same ego abuse, that can drive fake freedom fighters, bringing but momentary satisfaction that is never satisfied. The inspirational leaders like Daithi, Red Sarah and Ruarai which I briefly met, had qualities of humility that truly were spiritually inspiring.
